There are many reasons why one would pursue graduate studies in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria (UVic). The Department is energetic and progressive with a strong focus on research in leading edge areas: such as, robotics and advanced manufacturing; mechatronics and embedded systems; energy conversion systems; thermofluids; advanced materials; and, computational mechanics. The Department has an outstanding faculty who conduct state of the art research. Many faculty members have held prestigious national and international awards; research chairs; and, fellowships. Strategically located in the Pacific Northwest, Victoria is an exciting city in which to live and study.

Highlights

The Department is well integrated with research in the University as a whole; a new program has just been created in Software Engineering and Mechatronics  Graduates from the program have an excellent track record in attaining employment and starting rewarding careers  PhD graduates have found positions in academia, research laboratories and industry. MASc graduates also find employment in industry. Several graduate students have even started their own spin-off company  Faculty are partners in three National Network of Centers of Excellence and have also been remarkably successful in gaining large research infrastructure grants from both the provincial and federal governments

According to ScienceWatch, UVic ranks first nationally in geosciences, second in space sciences and education and third in engineering and mathematics for the period 2000-04. ScienceWatch ranks universities according to the number of citations per published research paper UVic is consistently ranked among the top 3 comprehensive universities in Canada, according to an annual Macleans Magazine rankings UVic's Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC) links universities and colleges on Vancouver Island with researchers, government and community, transforming great ideas into commercially viable businesses. As of January 2009, IDC had filed more than 300 national and international patent applications

Buildings & Resources

The Faculty of Engineering is housed in three new buildings: Engineering Office Wing, Engineering Laboratory Wing and Engineering/Computer Science Building. Collectively, these buildings are home to office space (faculty, staff and graduate student population); state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories; and, teaching classrooms equipped with the latest audio-visual presentation technology.
